WHEN THE NEED IS
SHORT-TERM OR A PROJECT
The cost per hire for IT talent can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. The cost of turnover is greater. If the need for IT talent is short term the case for hiring is weaker than the case for consulting. Using a consultant gives you better, quicker results often at less cost and at no risk to your company’s reputation.
Case Study 20: XYZ Food manufacturing hired Fred as their Director of Information Technology at an annual compensation plan of $180,000. It took Fred about 9 months to correct issues internally, stabilize IT, get the company on a solid future path technologically and reduce costs. Within weeks of completing the turnaround Fred was furloughed and replaced with a resource at less than half the cost. Since that occurred Fred’s story has been shared with hundreds of IT professionals throughout the Midwest. XYZ Food’s reputation has suffered tremendously as has their ability to recruit new IT talent. XZY Food had a short term need that they hired an employee for. The obvious better choice would have been to use a consultant to correct the immediate issues in the short term. |
